Who we are

Our group is a fun, open community of 10-12 scientists working on all different projects that touch on the chemical genetics of bacteria. The lab comes from all sorts of training backgrounds in microbiology, molecular genetics, chemistry, pharmacology and biochemistry. We are always looking to expand our group with new undergraduates, MSc & PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows!

Our infectious disease focused floor is an open-concept lab space where we share facilities and equipment with 11 other PIs in the Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics department.

What we do

The diversity of small molecules produced by bacteria and fungi intrigues us immensely. Each of us are highly motivated and interested in different aspects of small molecule behaviour such as therapeutic potential, chemical communication in microbial niches and the support they provide for bacterial survival alongside higher eukaryotes and plants.

To do this, we each employ numerous techniques to answer the questions at hand using state of the art technology such as whole-genome sequencing, mass spectrometry, transcriptomics, high throughput screening and electron microscopy to name a few. Here, we invite exploratory analysis and encourage each other to ask the crazy questions that govern nature!

Each well holds an extract produced by an Actinomycete. Our goal is to find out all the molecules produced and what kind of activity each molecule has!

Where we are located

We are part of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. We are located in the MaRS Discovery District in downtown Toronto, Canada.
